MAHWAH, NJ — One man was arrested Sunday evening after a car chase with police that started in Mahwah.
In a statement Monday, Mahwah police said officers were called to a business at Reich Avenue and Ramapo Valley Road by a person who said a business was being burgled. According to the statement, the caller could see a someone inside the business on surveillance footage and was able to describe the him to police.
Officers went to the scene and saw a man, later identified as 46-year-old Mark C. Todd, leaving he business on foot, police said. An officer ordered Todd to stop, and he took off running down Reich Avenue. He then got into his car, a 1988 Oldsmobile, and drove onto Ramapo Valley Road.
Police said Todd fled onto Route 17 south in, where he lost control of the car in Ramsey. Todd then leapt from the car and tried to flee on foot but was caught by police officers soon after, the statement said.
Police said cash and cigarettes taken from the burglary were found in Todd's car.
The suspect was charged with burglary, eluding, theft, criminal mischief, resisting arrest and other motor vehicle offenses, taken to a hospital for medical evaluation and released pending a court appearance.
