Description
If you know a young person who can't get enough of the water, a Fire Island program may be their perfect match for summer vacation.
The Fire Island Junior Lifeguard program, presented by Open Swim LI, will be open to for kids ages 8 to 16 this summer at Atlantique Beach, to help build a foundation of knowledge, attitude and skill in preparation for the NY State Level 1 Ocean Lifeguard Test.
While the course does not certify participants as lifeguards, it teaches water safety, introduces participants to the duties and responsibilities of an ocean lifeguard, its website states.
Kids will also practice life saving techniques, identify dangerous water conditions, learn to use rescue equipment, and participate in friendly competitions.
Dates for the program are: July 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30, and August 6 and 13. Participants must be able to perform certain swimming prerequisites.
Program fees are $200 for residents and $250 non-residents. To register, participants must fill out a registration form on page 5 and 6 of the Town of Islip's Recreation News letter for Winter/Spring 2022.
