OCEAN CITY, MD — One person is dead and two others injured after a U.S. Navy aircraft crashed in the water near the Eastern Shore boundary of Virginia and Maryland on Wednesday, according to multiple reports. The E2-D Hawkeye crashed near Wildcat Marsh just north of Chincoteague Island in Accomack County, WAVY-TV reported, citing military officials. A public affairs officer with Naval Air Force Atlantic told the station the plane was taking part in a routine exercise when it went down around 7:30 p.m. The plane, an advanced tactical airborne early warning aircraft, was based out of Naval Station Norfolk and assigned to an East Coast Airborne Command and Control Squadron, The Associated Press reported. Ryan Whittington, a spokesman for Maryland's Ocean City Fire Department, told The AP that it and other agencies were on the scene after the plane went down. The U.S. Coast Guard rescued two people and one was found dead in the aircraft. A statement provided by Myers at Naval Air Force Atlantic in Virginia to The AP said the two crew members have injuries that aren't considered life-threatening. The name of the deceased crew member will be released once next of kin are notified, WAVY-TV reported. The crash site is about 150 miles east-southeast of Washington, D.C.
