The ability to navigate and use an electronic health record (EHR) is essential in all health sciences fields. This session will demonstrate how nursing faculty used a standardized patient in an unfolding case scenario to introduce students to the EHR. The EHR is built using Excel spreadsheets and helps teach the mechanics of safe medication administration, documentation, and data interpretation to improve critical thinking and clinical judgment. This technology can be applied to other health sciences programs to familiarize students with the EHR to simulate current practice and real-world application. Using a simulated EHR in the classroom/lab/simulation setting allows students to make critical decisions in a safe non-threatening environment. This platform is also highly customizable and helps to diminish the threat of academic dishonesty with simulation. It provides a cost-effective solution for teaching informatics skills and inter-disciplinary communication to all health science students.
