Wiregrass Blues Society’s The Path to Influence Lecture Series for Big Mama Thornton
This lecture series will incorporate keynotes lectures, performances, and a panel discussion to celebrate and share the legacy of Big Mama Thornton. The series will explore the path of Big Mama Thornton which led her to influence dozens of generations of music.
Preserving the history of the Wiregrass’s own Big Mama Thornton, a prolific and dynamite musician, will help carry her legacy to new generations. Many in the Wiregrass do not realize that Big Mama was the first to record “Hound Dog” a song that would later catapult Elvis to stardom and iconic level celebrity. Elvis took Big Mama’s version of the song and ran with it. Undoubtedly, Big Mama affected the trajectory of Rock & Roll music. This series directly supports the Wiregrass Blues Society’s mission to keep the blues alive.
