WHITE PLAINS, NY — The city of White Plains will hold a ceremony to officially welcome a statue of Harriet Tubman to Renaissance Plaza. City officials said the ceremony for the "Harriet Tubman — The Journey To Freedom" statue will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in the plaza on Main Street and Mamaroneck Avenue in downtown White Plains. The rain date is set for 3 p.m. Sunday. The ceremony will feature guest speaker Ernestine (Tina) Martin Wyatt, the great-great-great grandniece of Harriet Ross Tubman, as well as performances by the Ministers Fellowship of White Plains Gospel Choir, youth dancers and African drumming. Fifteen Women's History Month honorees will be recognized and there will be a ribbon-cutting for the statue. Organizers said the sculpture of Tubman by Wesley Wofford has traveled around the United States, and White Plains is the only location in southern New York where it's scheduled to visit. The statue will be on display in Renaissance Plaza from April 2 through June 30. For more information on the Tubman statue, go here.
