Elderly Woman Dies In Tucson House Fire

TUCSON, AZ —An elderly woman died Wednesday in a fire at her Tucson home, the Tucson Fire Department said. The incident happened around 10:30 p.m. in the 3300 block of N. Flowing Wells Rd. Fire department investigators determined that smoking near an oxygen tank likely caused the fire. No foul play is suspected, the TFD said. According to a TFD spokesperson, engines were dispatched to the residence at 10:28 p.m. after the department received reports from people who spotted smoke coming from the home. TFD's Engine 8 was the first to arrive on the scene at 10:32 p.m., and firefighters observed heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of the structure, the TFD said. Neighbors told crews there was a person inside the home. News 13 reported that the neighbors had tried to get the woman out of the home before crews arrived, but the fire had spread too quickly. As some members of the crew pulled hose lines to battle the blaze, firefighters from Medic 8 and Rescue 8 entered the rear of the structure, where the elderly female victim was found dead, the TFD said. According to the TFD, the fire was determined to be under control at 10:48 p.m.
