Description
MADISON, NJ—Police are cautioning residents to lock their vehicles after a rash of thefts from parked vehicles was reported in the last two weeks.
The department said that since Aug. 29, multiple cars have been burglarized in town. Many of the thefts occurred in the owner's driveway and had another common characteristic.
"All of these motor vehicle burglaries and thefts were the result of vehicles being left unlocked," police said. According to the department, 2020 has seen a "significant increase" in vehicle thefts and burglaries in Morris County. "These types of incidents are not unique to Madison."
As a result, borough police have increased patrols and other anti-crime measures this year. These initiatives have led to multiple arrests, including two last week for a vehicle burglary caught in progress and two the previous week for auto theft.
"Take a few minutes each night to ensure that your vehicle has been locked and and/all valuables are removed," police warned, "this includes your purse/wallet and keys to the vehicle."
