Full Orange Line Service Resumes After Fatal Garage Collapse

BOSTON — The MBTA's Orange Line is safe to resume full service after a portion of the Government Center garage collapsed, killing a construction worker over the weekend. "Following a thorough in-depth inspection of the Orange Line tunnel, T engineers and partner agencies have determined that it is safe to resume Orange Line service," the MBTA said in a tweet Tuesday. "Trains will travel at reduced speeds in this area and bypass Haymarket Station, which is closed until further notice." According to a spokesperson from the MBTA, Green Line service will remain suspended between Government Center and North Stations while inspections and surface-level work near the garage continue. Green Line riders can switch to the Orange Line to connect at North Station and Downtown Crossing via Park Street. Bus Routes 92, 93, 111, 426, and 450 have now all returned to their regular routes. On Saturday, police say Peter Monsini, 51, of South Easton was in a construction vehicle inside the parking garage doing demolition when the floor gave way under the vehicle. As the floor was collapsing, Monsini was still inside the vehicle as it went over the side of the parking garage and fell nine stories, killing him. The garage, which has been under construction for years, is being demolished so a new residential tower at 50 New Sudbury Street can exist in the Haymarket area. An investigation into the collapse is still underway.
