Press release from the Johnston Community School District: March 11, 2022 MASON CITY, Ia. (March 11, 2022) — Johnston Academic Decathalon placed 2nd at the state meet in Mason City on March 4 and 5, amassing a total of 31,393 points and earning 14 individual medals. Johnston's team also qualified for the online nationals, which will take place at the end of April. Last year's team placed 6th in the nation. Coach Sue Cline said she anticipates a challenging but enjoyable end to the competition season again this year. Academic Decathlon is a contest where you take seven bubble tests, give a speech and get interviewed. Students are tested in 10 categories: art history, economics, essay, interview, language and literature, math, music history, science, social science and speech. Johnston team members and their individual awards at this year's state meet are as follows: Honors Adam Ehler: 2nd in Economics, 2nd in Essay, 3rd in Interview Anna Larson Dylan Coslin: 2nd in Interview Scholastic Elise Henrichsen: 1st in Literature, 1st in Science, 2nd in Essay, 3rd in Art Aaron Guo: 1st in Math, 1st in Economics, 2nd in Social Science, 3rd in Speech Harshaant Dhugga: 2nd in Math Varsity Fanuel Akakpo Will Anderson: 2nd in Social Science Alternates Sruthi Vallabhajosyula Kristin To: 1st overall Scholastic Alternate This press release was produced by the Johnston Community School District.
