Winnecke Cites Accomplishments, Challenges in State of City Address

By John Gibson, WNIN March 30, 2022 Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke presented accomplishments and challenges during his 2022 State of the City address. Winnecke's presentation was an audio-visual event that even included a live feed from Mesker Park Zoo's new penguin exhibit. On other topics, the mayor noted a changing scope for the commercial-residential project at the site of the imploded 420 Main Building: "The 5th and Main project is our number one downtown priority and I remain confident that a significant development will occur." Winnecke also talked about park projects, including infrastructure work at the former site of Roberts Stadium: "We're very excited to get going on Roberts Park and we anticipate a fun, new announcement in the weeks ahead." Citing the loss of daily flights between Evansville and Chicago, Winnecke urged members of the Rotary Club to do what they can to get the service back: "I know it may be difficult now but whenever possible, I encourage you to fly EVV first." And the mayor noted the pause in sewer rate increases through 2023, saying there will be some "must-do projects": "That will require some increases by the end of 2025. But the rates will be $20 less per month that the original plan required." Evansville customers will see water bill increases soon as the city replaces its treatment plant.
