Low-income Americans are continuing to change the face of healthcare and health services. One in five people in the U.S. rely on Medicaid to access healthcare services, and companies like Veyo are rising to the occasion. Entering its seventh year, the company provides Arizonans with HIPAA-secure, accessible transportation delivered by health-credentialed drivers. These drivers can accommodate a wide range of door-to-door patient-passenger needs. “Veyo has become an important part of Arizona’s effort to provide quality, dependable transportation and healthcare to low-income and aging populations,” said Josh Komenda, Veyo CEO and president. “In Arizona, we’ve completed more than 13.5 million rides to date and have partnered with recovery and behavioral health treatment centers throughout the state, providing 8,000 Medicare Advantage/Medicaid patients daily.” The company is unique in the market since its drivers are health-certified to handle a wide range of medical issues, including extra assistance with mobility and medical equipment. In addition, Veyo has forged partnerships with outpatient substance abuse clinics such as New Hope Behavioral Health Center (NHBHC) in Mesa. The company has provided more than 38,000 trips for the facility since January 2020. “Our services have filled a large gap in communities across the state,” said Komenda. “Our patient-passengers have shared with us countless stories about our drivers, such as Mykia Davis in Mesa who saved the life of her suicidal passenger last year.” While many rideshare companies have tried to serve this growing market, they have been unable to provide the level of training and care to ensure that patient-passengers are transported safely to and from appointments or healthcare facilities. Some patients have needs that require trained drivers, should an issue arise during transport, and measures need to be taken to address a health emergency. “Unlike some rideshare companies adapting their consumer business model to meet the growing need for health-related transportation, Veyo was built from the ground up to specialize in this space,” said Komenda. “Our model is focused on an important Medicaid/Medicare Advantage benefit for those needing access to healthcare – non-emergency medical transportation, or NEMT. The entire experience has been designed to be reliable, accessible, flexible, and HIPAA-secure.” To that end, drivers are fully credentialed for healthcare transportation, including being certified in CPR and undergoing extensive background checks. A first-of-its-kind online portal allows healthcare facilities to directly schedule transportation for their patients and note if they require any other assistance, such as help with oxygen or wheelchairs. As patient needs grow, Veyo is looking at expanding its services. “We are taking the on-demand model to a new level, thanks in part to our technology and predictive analytics that allow us to expand quickly to new requests, such as delivering home health supplies or food to those who are unable to get around as easily as they once did.” Future enhancements may include connecting the technology with the service model to add the pickup and delivery of medical devices and prescriptions or providing in-home care, such as assisting with dialysis treatments or getting lab work completed. “The blending of technology and service is transforming the healthcare industry,” he said. “The demand for patient-centric services and support will become greater in the years to come, and Veyo plans to be on the leading edge of this transformation.” Veyo is growing quickly and looking for drivers in Arizona, as well as hiring for their corporate teams in offices across the country.
