WORCESTER, MA — Worcester police will begin carrying flotation devices in their vehicles to use during water rescues following the drowning death of officer Manny Familia last summer. The "Manny tubes" are long, yellow foam devices that can be used to rescue struggling swimmers. Familia drowned in June 2021 while trying to rescue Troy Love, 14, from a pond at Green Hill Park. The tubes were donated to Worcester police by the Manny 267 Foundation, which was established as a memorial to Familia. The foundation aims to train kids on water safety and provide safety devices to police for water rescues. The foundation also announced on Tuesday that it will provide swimming lessons and water safety classes in Worcester this year. "We want to give back and help in any way possible to prevent this from happening again," said Manny Familia's brother, Elvin, said in a news release.
