4 Santa Monica H.S. Teens Lauded As PAL Scholarship Winners

SANTA MONICA, CA — Four local, young adults were honored recently by the Santa Monica Police Activities League and awarded individual scholarships, totaling a combined $22,000, during an online ceremony presented by the Chris Carrey PAL Education Scholarships program. The July 29, Zoom-video conference featured the scholarship recipients, their families and the Chris Carrey PAL Education Scholarships donors. The 2020 recipients from Santa Monica High School are: Melisa Ramirez-Hernandez, an incoming senior at Santa Monica H.S., who is reviewing potential schools and plans to study kinesiology to become a sports therapist;Karen Morales, incoming senior with plans to attend the University of California, Davis, to become an orthodontist;Jesse Del Rio, recent graduate, who will attend Santa Monica College in the fall to study kinesiology; Amy Tessema, recent graduate, who plans to attend San Jose State University to study communications with a focus on advertising.PAL also arranged to have dinner delivered to each award recipient's home for the winners and their families to celebrate the evening. The Chris Carrey PAL Education Fund commitee annually selects scholarship winners from PAL-member youth, who meet required criteria, show financial need and complete an application package. More than 110 scholarships, totaling more than $280,000, were awarded to PAL youth over the past 18 years, officials said. The Chris Carrey PAL Scholarship presenters for the 2020 virtual ceremony included Neil Carrey; Ed Simmons, SP Plus; Helen Albright; and Kathy Irby. "This was such an incredible evening with a first-ever virtual Chris Carrey PAL Education Scholarships presentation," said Eula Fritz, Santa Monica Police Activities League director. "The PAL youth work very hard on their school programs throughout the year, and the scholarships program is a terrific way to recognize and support their academic commitment and dreams." The Santa Monica Police Activities League (PAL), a nonprofit endeavor operated by the city of Santa Monica, aims to provide a safe and supervised place for young people, ages 6 through 17, with free academic, cultural and recreational activities.
