SANTA MONICA, CA — Downbeat 720 is inviting high school students in Santa Monica to perform virtually this year. The event is the city's longest open-mic for high school performers, continuing the tradition of 19 years of creativity from local youth and going in the pandemic. Students are invited to perform their music, poetry, comedy or art for participating students and professional artist mentors on Oct. 13. The event is dedicated to supporting young artists with performers receiving positive constructive feedback to help strengthen their performances and confidence. "Due to the current health crisis, and current restrictions on gathering to reduce the spread of COVID-19, it's a time of isolation for everyone, including young adults," according to a news release. "Downbeat 720 offers them a safe and supportive space for creative self-expression." Downbeat 720 will run every second and fourth Tuesday of the month from October 2020 to June 2021 at 7:20 p.m. to 9 p.m. Participants can join as early as 7 p.m. The first session will be Oct. 13.
