Description

SMITHFIELD, RI — The blue-green algae advisory at Georgiaville Pond has been lifted, the departments of Health and Environmental Management said in a joint release Wednesday afternoon. According to the announcement, the blue-green algae is still present in the water, though it is now in acceptably low levels. Cyanotoxin, which causes illness in humans and animals, is not present in detectable levels. Algae blooms can appear suddenly, and the public is urged to avoid contact with any water that is bright green or has a dense floating mat of algae on the surface. Even after the algae is no longer visible, toxins can still be present in the water.
