Press release from Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Santa Cruz County: June is National Reunification Month and now, in the midst of a pandemic, more than ever we are making sure foster youth have caring adults in their lives that can advocate for their best interest- which often means reunifying them with their birth parents. Under the current conditions, the role of a Court Appointed Special Advocate is an even more vital means of connection for our children and youth to receive the services and support they so desperately need. During Shelter in Place, and always, a CASA volunteer spends time with one child each week, getting to know them and gathering information from everyone involved in the child's case. In order to ensure everyone's safety and well-being during this pandemic, our volunteers are spending time with their youth virtually, either through video calls or writing letters. Volunteers communicate with attorneys and social workers. They review records, research information, and talk to anyone involved with the child, including parents, extended family members, doctors and teachers.
