SMITHFIELD, RI—The Smithfield Police Department is asking the public for help in locating a man wanted in connection with a bank robbery that occurred Thursday morning. According to police, at 11:48 p.m. they responded to Navigant Credit Union, which is located at 468 Putnam Pike, for a reported robbery. Initial reports advised officers that a man wearing a dark-hooded sweatshirt and a face mask had run from the bank and headed in a westerly direction after demanding money from the bank teller. Once on scene, however, officers searched for a suspect but didn't find one. A clerk told police that a man did approach the counter and handed the clerk a light-colored nylon bag, and told the clerk to put "100's, 50's and 20's in the bag, No dye packs, No GPS! Hurry the f *** up. Don't look at me!" The man then grabbed the bag and fled the bank on foot, police said. The suspect is described as a light-skinned male, possibly white or Hispanic, approximately 5'6'' tall, thin build, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt over a light colored baseball cap, a blue surgical type face mask, jeans, white sneakers and blue rubber gloves. Police said suspect was seen on video surveillance running westerly toward an apartment complex. The investigation into this incident remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Smithfield Detectives at (401) 231-2500.
