SMITHFIELD, RI — Smithfield has opened registration for its town recreation summer camp after Gov. Gina Raimondo gave the go ahead for summer camps to take place — with proper precautions — amid the coronavirus health emergency. Smithfield camps will take place July 13 through August 17 at Gallagher Middle School. Sessions will be limited to 50 participants each and will include smaller "pods" of camps with extra hand-washing and additional sanitizing of facilities. "It's not going to be just like last year," Raimondo said during her Thursday news conference. "There are going to be new cleaning regimens. ... It's going to be fun, but different." Raimondo said she is working with town Parks and Recreation departments to make sure they have the resources they need, such as additional staffing and cleaning supplies. Rhode Island will use some of its COVID-19 emergency relief funds for this purpose, Raimondo said. The Smithfield camp registration form said the town will adhere by all state and CDC guidelines at the time of the camp. Activities will include arts & crafts, kids yoga, fun & fitness, sports, team building, science, tie dye and special events. Camps run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day for kindergarten through 6th graders.
