Press release from Albuquerque Public Schools: March 24, 2022 The People's Institute Model believes that racism is the primary barrier preventing communities from building effective coalitions and overcoming institutionalized oppression and inequities. The model helps individuals, communities, organizations and institutions move beyond addressing the symptoms of racism to undoing the causes of racism so as to create a more just and equitable society. In this five-hour intermediate-level workshop, participants will experience a humanistic process for laying a foundation to explore how we have been socialized and conditioned to think about race and racism through analyzing class, power and institutional/individual relationships to and within communities. As power is analyzed concepts will be introduced that play a role in maintaining the current disparate racial outcomes that every system and institution produces. Participants will Analyze class, power and institutional/individual relationships to and within communities. Develop a common language and analysis for examining racism in the United States. Develop a common definition of racism and an understanding of its different forms: individual, institutional, linguistic, and cultural. Understand how all of us, including white people, are adversely impacted by racism every day, everywhere; Address surface assumptions about how your work is (or is not) affected by racism; Gain knowledge about how to be more effective and humanistic in the work you do - in your school or department, organizations you're a part of, with your community; Develop awareness and understanding about how racism is manifesting in people's lives and work, and how to begin to organize to Undoing RacismĀ® As an intermediate-level course, it is recommended that participates have done some introductory equity/anti-racism training or other foundational work prior. Open to all APS staff, however recommend completing Community Conversations and/or some foundational training in equity/anti-racism prior. Schools can also invite parents and community members to participate. Introduction to Undoing Racism Using People's Institute Model is a five-hour workshop. There will be two sessions available on the following days.
