SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — Numerous nonprofits throughout Santa Cruz and Monterey counties, including food banks and youth groups, were recipients of $527,000 in funding during this year's pandemic via Bank of America's philanthropic investments — efforts aimed at the most vulnerable populations hardest hit by the virus, according to corporate officials. In addition to grants, the bank also donated 76,000 personal protective equipment masks to help protect citizens from COVID-19, the company said. "As a major company and employer, Bank of America recognizes the responsibility we have to support our local communities however we can," said Bill Tebbe, market president for B of A's Monterey Bay region. "By directing philanthropic capital locally, we can address the most immediate needs while helping our most vulnerable communities become more resilient and positioned for success moving forward." During 2020, B of A grants were awarded to Digital NEST of Watsonville, a work-training organization that connects underserved youth with job skills, along with funding Salinas-based, health-focused Natividad Foundation, Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz County, Food Bank for Monterey County, Community Food Bank of San Benito County and Central Coast YMCA. "With the help from the bank's grants," B of A officials said, "Digital NEST will hire additional staff to scale its programs for broader impact and help continue their expansion into Salinas and Gilroy, while the food banks will increase food distribution to food insecure families and provide childcare for essential workers." Beyond grants and donations, local bank employees also gave back to the community this year through virtual volunteerism, dedicating 566 hours to local causes and projects across the region, according to bank officials.
