Description

Starting at 6 pm Dougherty will show two Women Make Movies' productions and two more recent youth made films from contemporary filmmakers On March 31 at the Guild Cinema, independent filmmaker and feminist cultural advocate, Ariel Dougherty, a Truth or Consequences resident, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Women Make Movies, Inc., the organization she co-founded in 1972. Starting at 6 pm Dougherty will show two Women Make Movies' productions and two more recent youth made films from contemporary girl filmmaking programs. One of those works, LAS MUJERES DENTRO DE MI /THE WOMAN INSIDE ME (2013, 4:54m), directed anonymously, was produced in the Girl Tech Program here in Albuquerque run by New Mexico Media Literacy Project. Dougherty's own work, SURVIVA (1980, 32m) co-directed with animator Carol Clement will be screened. A quasi drama, alla Warhol, the film centers on a rural woman artist and her support group. The screenings will conclude with the mini-feature, WOMEN'S HAPPY TIME COMMUNE (1972, 47m) directed by Sheila Paige, the other co-founder of Women Make Movies. Set in a fictional 1850s, non-actors improvise their own words, costumes and make-up, upturning the “Western” into a feminist farce. Dougherty will lead a discussion after the screenings about the films and the state of women's media today. Women Make Movies is now the globe's largest distributor of women made films with a collection of over 700 works. Since refocusing on distribution as its core program in 1980, SURVIVA was the last film on which the organization served in the role as a producer.
