MERCER COUNTY, NJ — A 9-year-old girl was shot and killed on Friday evening in Trenton, Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri said. Around 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 25, Trenton patrol units responded to Kingsbury Square for a Shot Spotter activation and the report of fights breaking out among a large group of people. When officers arrived, they found a large crowd outside in a low-rise courtyard and a 9-year-old girl suffering a gunshot wound, Onofri said. She was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, then to Robert Wood Johnson New Brunswick Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly before midnight, Onofri said. No other shooting injuries were reported. Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora appealed to eyewitnesses to come forward. "I'm grieving for the family and friends whose hearts are absolutely broken on this morning. I know investigators are doing everything they can to bring about justice. But they need help from our residents," Gusciora said on Facebook. "There were many eyewitnesses to a shooting in the Kingsbury Square courtyard who can help hold this individual accountable. Please, we must step up together." The Mercer County Homicide Task Force and the Trenton Police Department are currently investigating the shooting. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Mercer County Homicide Task Force at (609) 989-6406.
