On Friday, March 25th, Appleton will launch the 2nd year of its pilot program with Bird Scooters.
The first year of the pilot program saw above average results with 25,627 trips taken and 1,072 regular commuters between April and October 2021. In November 2021 the City surveyed more than 1,500 people. Based on community feedback, the 2nd year of our pilot program will include additional safety precautions along with the continuation of 2021 guidelines. Find updated FAQs here.
No riding scooters on College Ave. sidewalks between Drew and Badger. Riders' max speed in the College Ave. corridor between Drew and Richmond will be reduced from 15mph to 12mph to encourage walking the scooters on the sidewalk or using adjacent streets (Lawrence and Washington). Park responsibly out of right-of-way of pedestrians and vehicles (off of private property) Geo-fencing will prevent parking on bridges Incentives will be given to park at preferred locations New Bird Three Model On-board GPS tech for more accurate geo-fencing Larger self-sealing tires for increased traction reduced vibration equaling a more comfortable ride Dual center kickstand for anti-tipping when parked Total number of scooters deployed during pilot period will not exceed 350 Initial deployment of 200 (100 downtown, 50 north of Wisconsin Ave. and 50 south of Calumet St.) Birds will be deployed in groups of no more than ten in any given location See the full Memorandum of Understanding here.
