The event is being planned by youth for youth and will address topics including mindfulness, substance use, suicide prevention and more. The annual Youth Summit of Bennington is an event created by youth for youth ages 13-19, sponsored by United Counseling Service (UCS). The theme of this year’s Summit, Diversity and Inclusion, provides a focus for participants to explore various topics pertaining to mental, physical, and community wellness. This year’s keynote speaker is Dawn Campbell, EdD, a local school system administrator, who grew up in poverty and overcame it. This year our Youth Summit Committee has provided you with a variety of topics to choose from: We are offering six workshops and four Mini Movements. Please choose from two workshops and one Mini Movement. You can sign up for the Workshops and Mini Mental Health Movements when you register. WORKSHOPS: Suicide Prevention Have you ever wondered how to help someone who is having suicidal thoughts, or what the right thing to do is? How can you tell if someone is serious about hurting themselves? In this workshop you will learn to recognize warning signs of people who may need help. You will learn how to access proper resources, myths about suicide will be debunked, and true facts will be shared Diversity and Inclusion Have you felt like you did not matter because of your race, culture, or gender? Learn about resources within your community and how to support diversity. Learn how to be an advocate and listen to peers talk about how their diversities have impacted their daily life. Emotional Regulation Do you sometimes feel like you are going to explode? Do you sometimes explode? This workshop will help you understand your body and the emotions that come along with it. Learn new coping skills and strategies to utilize while dealing with the stress in your life. Substance Use and Awareness Are you struggling with substance use? Do you want to know what resources are out there for yourself or someone you may know? This workshop will provide you with information and resources on substance use and awareness. Come learn how you can help yourself or someone you love/ care about. Career Skills Do you need help with resume building? Do you want a job? Who doesn’t like money? This workshop will introduce simple interviewing techniques and resume building skills to help you get employment. Healthy Lifestyle Are you drinking energy drinks every day? Are you eating chips and fast food for dinner all the time? Are you stuck in front of the computer or television all day? Do you want a healthy relationship? Learn some healthy lifestyle tips from eating better and learning exercises that can boost your energy naturally. This interactive workshop will have attendees consider qualities they desire in a healthy relationship and qualities they will not tolerate. The awareness of personal boundaries will be reinforced with an interactive component that helps create self-esteem and self-created support systems. MINI MOVEMENTS: Quilted Mural Project Add your mark to this creative collaborative community art project. Paint an image on a piece of canvas which will later be joined together with other finished canvases to create a Puzzle Mural. Stress Less, Chill More Getting into a positive headspace is easier than you think. Using the techniques shared in this interactive session, you'll learn how to get your stress under control and breathe a little easier. Zumba Blast If you haven’t tried this fun dance workout, here is your chance. You'll shake your thing to fun tunes and move and groove (and laugh a lot) in this energizing session Hungry, Hungry Human Hippos Nothing says “I’m a big kid now,” like a game of human Hungry, Hungry Human Hippos.
