ROSEMONT, IL — Police said they have identified a gunman in Friday's deadly shooting at the Fashion Outlets of Chicago mall in Rosemont. Jose G. Matias, an 18-year-old Chicago resident, fatally shot 20-year-old Joel Valdes and wounded a 15-year-old girl who police described as an innocent bystander, according to a statement from the Rosemont Public Safety Department. "Numerous witnesses have been interviewed since the beginning of this investigation which helped identify Matias as the shooter in this incident," police said. According to the police statement, the incident stemmed from an argument involving Valdes, Matias and two unidentified people. "It was near the food court that Matias is observed on surveillance video pulling out a firearm and shooting in the direction of Valdes," police said. Matias fled the mall after the shooting in a Honda that was later found in Bellwood by Cook County sheriff's police. Rosemont police had earlier described the driver of that car as a person of interest in the investigation. The warrant for Matias' arrest is enforceable nationwide, according to police. No other arrest or warrants had been made as of Tuesday afternoon.
