Local Charities Band Together To Update Domestic Violence Housing

ORLAND PARK, IL — Several local charities came together to help fund renovations to housing for women and children escaping domestic violence, the Crisis Center for South Suburbia told Patch. According to the south suburban non-profit, one of the charity's most used resources is housing throughout the south suburbs which is available to survivors of domestic violence. Families affected by violence or those in need of safe shelter can stay in the housing program for up to two years. Of the 49 units available, four families in Orland Park housing were temporarily displaced while burst pipes and flooding rendered one building in need of major repairs. Due to donations from Northwestern Medicine, Kiwanis Club of Orland Park and a Crisis Center fundraising group, plumbing repairs are now completed. In addition, combined funds from all three charities will go towards buying new appliances, updating bathrooms and installing new flooring. "Updating these apartments not only makes our clients feel good, but it empowers them to see what can be possible when they move into permanent housing," Lorri Nagle, director of development at the Crisis Center, said. Jeff Good, president of Northwestern Medicine Palos Hospital, told Patch the hospital is always looking to meet health care needs in the area. Good said the hospital was inspired by the Crisis Center to join the trio of charities in updating the homes.
