Acclaimed vocalist Mary LaRose puts vocals, with and without words, to the works of modern jazz composers.
As a jazz vocalist, Mary LaRose is known for extending the Jazz “Vocalese” tradition to Post-Bop repertoire, singing her original lyrics to the compositions and improvisations of Ornette Coleman, Anthony Braxton, Charles Mingus, and Eric Dolphy among others. Her unique approach to music is documented in her many recordings which have included artistic collaborations with artists such as Mark Ribot, Steve Swell, Mark Feldman, the string quartet Brooklyn Rider, Steven Bernstein, Dominic Duval, Tomeka Reid, Matt Wilson, and her partner and artistic collaborator Jeff Lederer. In “Out There”, she brings her two worlds fully together for the first time, infusing her images of exploratory saxophonists of the 1960s with the improvisational essence of the music they produced. For this performance, Mary will be joined by Jeff Lederer (sax and clarinet), Yaz Takamura (bass), and Matt Wilson (drums).
Mary is also an accomplished artist whose artwork is on exhibit in our gallery.
