Description

SUDBURY, MA — Sudbury Town Meeting may declare a climate emergency in May, and an upcoming public forum will aim to educate residents about the article. Apart from declaring a local state of emergency over climate change, the article would also prompt Sudbury to hire a director of local sustainability, and form a task force to address the crisis. The article, sponsored by members of Sustainable Sudbury, would also seek a reduction of local carbon emissions by 50 percent by 2030, according to the article. "The declaration of a climate emergency is an official acknowledgment by the people of Sudbury that all of humanity, including Sudbury, is in a climate emergency — a dangerous situation calling for immediate action. To date, 23 Massachusetts municipalities have made similar declarations, including our neighbors, Acton and Wayland," Sustainable Sudbury climate emergency working group coordinator Leslie Lowe said in a news release. Sustainable Sudbury and the League of Women Voters of Sudbury will host a public forum on Monday to talk about the article, which will be voted on at the May 2 spring meeting. Find details about speakers and register for the event on the Sudbury LWV website.
