STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — A man began shooting at his neighbors without provocation in Stafford on Sunday morning, police said. Deputies arrested the suspect and none of the neighbors were shot during the incident. The incident began around 8:40 a.m. on Sunday. At that time, 911 callers reported gunshots on Aster Lane near Bell Hills Road. At that time, a resident walked outside his home and greeted a neighbor, who police identified as Scott Jones. The resident asked Jones if he was okay. Jones said "no," pulled out a handgun, and fired multiple shots at the victim, police said. The victim ran back into his home and Jones followed him, according to police. Jones continued to fire "indiscriminately" in the victim's direction, the sheriff's office said in a report. The victim's home sustained damage. However, the victim and his family were unharmed. The victim yelled at Jones to get out. Jones complied, the sheriff's office said. He then walked to another neighbor's front porch. Jones rang the doorbell and knocked and kicked on the neighbor's door, police said. The residents saw that Jones had a gun, so they called 911, according to the police report. The sheriff's office said there was no previous animosity between Jones and his neighbors. When deputies arrived on the scene, Jones was still on the neighbor's front porch. The sheriff's office said Jones complied when deputies ordered him to drop the gun. However, as deputies gave more instruction to Jones, he charged at them, the sheriff's office said in a report. The deputies used a Taser and pepper spray to take Jones into custody, according to police. Jones was taken to a hospital and checked for injuries. The sheriff's office charged him with attempted malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, burglary while armed with a deadly weapon, shooting into an occupied dwelling, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail. Have a story idea? Email me at [email protected] with tips, questions, comments, or concerns.
