Rhode Island Fall School Sports Still In Limbo To Start September

NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI — On the day Gov. Gina Raimondo said the light was green for a return to in-person learning in Rhode Island this fall, the light appears to be still blinking yellow when it comes to school sports. The Rhode Island Interscholastic League released a statement after Gov. Raimondo's press conference saying that while it is "committed to offering our member schools as many traditional fall sports as possible within the Governor's guidelines for school sports," it is still unclear what sports will be allowed and how communities in different stages of phased reopenings could contest them. "Based on the information released this afternoon, our member schools must now determine what education plan they will be implementing on Sept. 14 to begin the academic year," the statement said. The RIIL said its offices received many questions on Monday on the status of fall sports given Raimondo's announcement, but that no decisions had yet been made with the start of school just two weeks away. "We are continuing conversations with Governor Raimondo's office and key staff members regarding school sports guidance and expect to release more information later this week," the statement said. "The RIIL appreciates everyone's patience and the support of our member schools as we all continue to navigate the difficult task of reopening schools during the COVID-19 pandemic."
