Here are the top three stories today in Cincinnati: Hamilton County area will get approximately $55 million from an opioid settlement to "clean up the mess" caused by addiction. The settlement money is from a lawsuit brought against Johnson & Johnson, AmerisourceBergen, Cardinal Health, and McKesson. The county could start getting the money, allocated for addiction treatment, prevention, education, and safety, as early as next month. (WVXU) Experts say that Cincinnati needs to increase its annual contribution to the retirement system for city employees immediately or there may not be enough money for benefits for employees who will retire in 20 - 30 years. The pension fund is about 70.5 percent funded. Officials stated that the retirement system can be fully funded by 2045 if the city acts immediately. (WVXU) Animal intake levels have increased 60 to 70 percent since late 2020, said Meaghan Colville, Cincinnati Animal CARE's director. The shelter currently has 175 dogs on-site, the highest level of capacity it has seen since taking over the Hamilton County shelter in August 2020. The shelter is calling on the public to adopt or foster an animal to help the facility get back to a manageable population.
