Lanes Shift For Final Phase Of Route 4 Bridge Work

NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI — Drivers on Route 4 will notice a difference when heading in both directions. Starting this week, lanes are shifted for the next phase of construction on the bridge between exits three and five. On Sunday, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation changed the traffic pattern in the construction site, shifting all lane to the left for the third phase of construction, which is the last. This will remain in place until December, when all lanes are scheduled to reopen. The department is working on a different portion of the bridge, which passes over Stony Lane, in each phase of the project. To help improve its status as structurally deficient, crews are conducting repairs to the steel and concrete, replacing bridge joints and repaving. The bridge was built in 1988, and carries about 61,000 vehicles daily. The construction work is part of a $4.2 million, 11-bridge project in North Kingstown and East Greenwich, set to be completed in fall 2021.
