PHOENIX — Police suspect that a Phoenix father shot himself and then shot his son after the son's mother came to pick the boy up Sunday morning, Phoenix police said in a news release. The father, Amir Vetry, 53, was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. The six-year-old son, who was also taken to a local hospital, was expected to survive his injuries. Police were called around 9:30 a.m. Sunday near North 24th Street and East Cactus Road, police said, after Vetry and the boy's mother got into a physical fight when she showed up to pick the boy up, according to police. The mother got away from Vetry and ran for help from witnesses on the street, police said. That was when witnesses heard shots fired inside the house, according to police. The boy suffered multiple gunshot wounds and Vetry had one gunshot wound that police believed was self-inflicted, police said. A gun was found next to Vetry's body, police said. This is a breaking story, Patch will update it as more information becomes available.
