San Mateo's Measure Y Squeaks By, Competing Initiative Fails

SAN MATEO, CA — San Mateo have voters passed a ballot measure that extends a previously approved amendment to the city's General Plan on building height limits. But just barely. Measure Y won the Nov. 3 election by a 43-vote margin among more than 46,000 ballots cast in results certified by county officials Thursday. The measure amends the General Plan to allow the construction height limit of 55 feet to remain in effect for another 10 years. It required just a simple majority for passage and its supporters didn't get much more.Supporters of the measure garnered 23,038 votes (50.5 percent) compared with 22,995 votes (49.5 percent) opposed to the measure. Measure R, competing ballot initiative, lost by a margin of more than 3,500 votes. Opponents of the measure got 24,631 votes (53.88 percent) and supporters of the initiative collected 21,085 votes (46.12 percent). Measure R would have loosened upzoning restrictions around Caltrain stations that Measure Y keeps in place.
