From the City of Des Moines: DES MOINES, IOWA — Friday, March 13, 2020 – In an effort to keep the health and safety of Des Moines residents a priority during the coronavirus pandemic, Mayor Frank Cownie strongly advises Des Moines businesses, churches, event planners and organizations to consider canceling gatherings to help reduce the spread of the virus. "I would like to encourage residents to use good judgment when making decisions about attending large gatherings and encourage everyone to continue practicing social distancing. Adhering to both recommendations will assist in slowing down the spread of this highly contagious disease." The City's senior leadership response team, directed by the Mayor, is monitoring coronavirus developments and the potential impact on meetings, City services and public safety. "We hope that most City meetings will be held, however, those meetings will be held only if we feel confident we can accommodate the public while still providing optimal social distancing for everyone in attendance," Cownie said. "As Mayor, I want to thank the public for their patience and understanding as we navigate a very challenging time for Des Moines, our state and the country."
