In celebration of Earth Day, go green and clean up the ocean community of Cohasset on April 23 Go green and join the Town of Cohasset, the Open Space & Recreation Committee (COSRC) and the Chamber of Commerce for the 4th Annual Town-Wide Clean Up to celebrate the 52nd observance of Earth Day, a global day intended to inspire appreciation in Earth’s natural environment and restore its ecosystems. The Clean Up on Saturday, April 23 from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm joins the effort to remove millions of pounds of non-biodegradable, single-use trash and debris that bog our parks, shorelines, and neighborhoods. In recognition of Earth Day’s 2022 theme, “Climate Change,” the Town is also sponsoring a ZOOM presentation on Thursday, April 21 at 7:00 pm with climatologist Alexander More who will address how climate change affects pandemics. More is a Research Associate, Assistant Research Professor & Associate Professor of Environmental Health at Harvard University. “By bringing the community together for this event, we remind the citizens of Cohasset that we all have a responsibility to take care of our natural environment,” says Peter Pescatore, chairman of the COSRC. “Annually, the Clean Up attracts between 160-180 participants that pick-up trash from North Main Street to Government Island making the town a brighter, greener place to live. At last year’s event, 250 trash bags filled a 22-foot-long dumpster with tires, beer cans, water bottles, cigarette butts and even a staircase.” Since 1994, the COSCRC has sponsored Earth Day events. This year’s Clean Up kicks off at the Cohasset Town Hall main entrance, where participants of all ages are assigned different locations to work, or they can choose their own preferred site. All participants will receive a reusable tote bag and a trash bag. On hand will be representatives from environmental action groups: Alternative Energy Committee, Wild Cohasset, Cohasset Conservation Trust, Safe Harbor Cohasset Coalition, Cohasset Center for Student Coastal Research, and the Cohasset Democratic Town Committee regarding climate change legislation. The careless disposal of trash is a gateway to numerous problems. It tarnishes our town and encourages others to follow suit making area eyesores. Discarded sharp objects, glass and toxic chemicals can cause accidental human harm. Six-pack rings and straws kill birds, turtles and marine mammals, and plastic bottles and fibers can affect waterways and fish in our own harbor. Tips for Clean Up Day: 1. Choose a safe location to clean, such as your neighborhood, favorite trail, or boating area. Clean-up during daylight hours in suitable weather conditions. 2. Use the trash bag provided, wear gloves and protective clothing. 3. Include the kids and make it fun. Create a scavenger hunt to find different types of trash like a coffee cup or a competition to see who can collect 10-cans the fastest. The COSRC’s intent is to engage the community to participate in sustaining, protecting, and improving the natural resources and recreational amenities that are the foundation of our community.
