NEWPORT, RI — Following the announcement of a statewide drought advisory, the city of Newport announced it would begin low-flow flushing in the water system to help improve resident's water quality. Flushing began Thursday and is expected to be finished by the end of the day. The high summer temperatures and low rainfall led some customers to report a strange taste in their tap water on Tuesday afternoon. On Wednesday, source water testing was conducted and the source water was changed, and systems optimized in response to the drought. The system changes combined with the system flushing is expected to completely resolve the taste issues in the water.
