Food, Dance, Tales, Folklore and Drama celebration of people Yoruba origins organized by the people of Yoruba descent domicile in Texas. Oranmiyan - soldier and empire builder. Oranmiyan was a grandson of Oduduwa, the legendary progenitor of the Yoruba people who dominate the southwestern region of Nigeria and many other countries along the west coast of the African continent. A legendary hero of the Yoruba people, Oranmiyan was a wanderer and soldier who expanded the borders of the Yoruba kingdom with alliances and conquests of many neighboring tribes. Entitled to the throne of Oduduwa in Ile-Ife, the spiritual heartland of Yorubaland, he went on to found the royal lineage of the Benin Empire which has lasted to this day. And as the first Alaafin of Oyo, he became the warrior-king of the Yoruba people. Like the famed Alexander the Great, his impact is long-lasting. His conquests and travels took him all over the area of modern West Africa. Thus, many African tribes share direct linkage through him, including the majority of African-Americans whose ancestors centuries ago, lived along the coastline and the interior regions of West Africa. Yoruba Cultural Center, Dallas is proud to present, in the latest of its monthly Cultural Evening series, a family-friendly historical perspective of the famous conqueror-prince.
