Whatcom Community College invites applications for a Grounds and Nursery Services Specialist 2 (Class Code 591J) in the College's Facilities department. This recruitment is open to ALL qualified applicants. This position will support the duties of the Grounds Supervisor and will report to the Grounds Supervisor. Responsibilities include performing skilled gardening work in the maintenance of grounds, landscapes, nurseries, and/or greenhouses. Position instructs the work of others, including students, staff, or part-time employees regularly assigned to gardening. Responsibilities Include but are not limited to: -Prepares soil for planting; -Plants, transplants, trims, and waters plants, trees, flowers and shrubs; -Applies pesticides and herbicides to flowers and shrubs; Seeds, mows, irrigates, fertilizes and maintains lawns; -Uses a variety of manual tools and equipment, such as rakes, pruning shears, hand edger's, loppers, shovels, wheelbarrows and pesticide sprayers; -Operates power and motorized equipment such as weed trimmers, chain saws, backpack blowers, rototillers, light tractors, front-end loaders, small trucks, lawn mowers, sweepers, aerators, sod cutters and snow blowers while working in inclement weather; -Cleans, services and makes repairs to tools and equipment; -May supervise lower level staff. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: -High school diploma or GED. -Must be insurable and hold a driver's license valid in Washington State. Preferred Qualifications: -One year of experience or training involving grounds maintenance, gardening, plant care, cultivation and landscape installation. -Knowledge and experience in the maintenance, cleaning and repair of lawn service equipment and tools. -Experience in the maintenance and repair of artificial turf fields. -Experience in the maintenance and care of raingardens, wetlands, retention ponds and other related storm water systems. -Experience in the maintenance and repair of parking lots related to asphalt repair, crack filling, and striping/painting. -Experience in the maintenance, repair, and installation of irrigation systems. -Current Washington State applicator license. -Current First Aid/CPR certification. -Current forklift certification. -Experience in a community college/higher education work environment. -Develops innovative ideas that provide solutions to all types of workplace challenges and brings ideas to supervisor. -Earn the trust, respect, and confidence of coworkers and public through consistent honesty, forthrightness and professionalism in all interactions. -Actively contribute to a work environment that embraces diversity and uses diverse perspectives to enhance the attainment of organizational goals. This position is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE). -Per Governor Inslee's Proclamation 21-14, state employees must be fully vaccinated no later than October 18, 2021. Shift and Working Conditions: -Work schedule may vary from season to season depending on specific needs of the college and may require Saturday as part of regular schedule. Shift likely Mon-Fri 6:30 am-3:00 pm. The ability to safely handle pesticides, fertilizers, and other maintenance related products is essential to this position. Physical ability to perform the function of the job including ability to lift up to 50 pounds, and agility to bend/walk/stand for extended periods of time and climb ladders.
