Des Moines City Extends Building Closures Until At Least February 2021

Press release from the City of Des Moines: November 9, 2020 DES MOINES, IOWA – Monday, November 9, 2020 –City Administration Buildings have been closed to the public since March of this year due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. With record numbers being set in both the number of hospitalizations as well as new cases in the state of Iowa, Mayor Frank Cownie announced today that the closure will be extended until at least February 1, 2021. As of this morning, Iowa reported 156,816 total cases and 1,845 deaths with 23,815 of the positive cases being in Polk County alone. "With numbers this staggering, managing the safety of our employees as well as the residents of Des Moines remains a top priority," Cownie said. "Our City offices will remain closed until we see a consistent downturn in numbers in Iowa, but especially here in Polk County." The extended closure includes the City Hall, Armory, Municipal Service Center, and Public Works buildings, the Des Moines Wastewater Reclamation Authority (WRA) and the office location for the Civil & Human Rights Department.
