Description

Over the past week, it looked like the holidays came early to Deerfield senior living community as residents packed toiletries, candy, beef jerky and other in-demand items into two large packages destined for Des Moines-area troops overseas. The soldiers are stationed in Kosovo and Africa on peacekeeping missions, and each box contains supplies and treats for roughly 50 soldiers. "We're honored to partner with the Warrior Family Readiness Group to support these local service members," said Justin Riesberg, Deerfield's director of lifestyle. "As we approached Veterans Day, our residents and community at large wanted these men and women to know just how much we appreciate their courage and sacrifice." Deerfield residents donated approximately half the supplies, while the retirement community purchased the rest. Additionally, residents wrote letters to the troops to include in each package as a personal thank-you for their service. "A member of our culinary team is currently deployed with the National Guard on peacekeeping duty, so this is something very near and dear to the Deerfield family," added Riesberg. "We hope these packages might even reach her."
