Press release from the City of Des Moines:
December 3, 2020
DES MOINES, IOWA – December 3, 2020 – After being closed for construction since April 1, 2020, the City has reopened the Scott Avenue bridge to vehicle traffic. While the bridge reopened for vehicle traffic this week, this is not the final opening of the bridge as originally planned. Next spring more structural repairs to the bridge's arches will be completed which will require closing the bridge for approximately three months in the spring.
"There are temperature requirements for the concrete which make it impractical to continue through the winter," City Engineer Steve Naber said. "This means the bridge will remain open through the winter, but when the weather warms up in the late spring, we'll need to close the bridge again to complete the remaining repairs on the bridge arches."
Reclosure of the Scott Avenue bridge will not happen until there are consistent overnight lows into the 50's. This provides that once the arch repairs start, they will not have to be put on pause due to weather conditions. Once the arch repairs are complete, the remaining repairs will be completed while the bridge is open to traffic.
