Press release from the City of Des Moines: December 10, 2020 DES MOINES, IOWA – Thursday, December 10, 2020 – The Des Moines Public Works Department is geared up and ready to plow snow for the first time this season. With rain turning to snow on Friday, Public Works Director Jonathan Gano says his department is ready for this weekend's winter weather. "We plan on having our plows out as soon as snow starts accumulating on the roadways," Gano said. "They'll work to keep our city snow routes clear so that no Des Moines residents will be more than four blocks from a plowed route." This winter weather system is coming on the heels of an unseasonably warm week, which Gano says presents unique challenges. "This storm is starting as rain that will turn into snow," Gano said. "That means we can't use brine as an anti-icing agent with this storm because it would be washed off the streets by the rain. That combination could also lead to ice under the snow as temperatures drop, so be careful if you have to be out on the roads this weekend." Des Moines residents can track plowing progress and stay prepared for winter weather all season long at DMSnow.org or by following DSM Public Works on Twitter and Des Moines Public Works on Facebook.
