JERSEY CITY, NJ — Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said Tuesday that the Homicide Unit has charged a 65-year-old Jersey City man with the murder of his 67-year-old girlfriend. Rand March was arrested at approximately 4 p.m. on Monday and has been charged with murder, a first-degree crime; possession of a weapon (knife) for an unlawful purpose, a third-degree crime; and unlawful possession of a weapon (knife), a fourth-degree crime. A press release from the Prosecutor's Office said that on Monday, just before 2 p.m., members of the Jersey City Police Department responded to an apartment on Court House Place to perform a welfare check on a senior resident. When officers gained access to the apartment, they found a lifeless female, later identified as Kimberly Haston, on the floor with an apparent laceration to her neck. Haston was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 3:52 p.m. The findings of the Regional Medical Examiner are pending. March, who shared the apartment with Haston and was in the apartment at the time, was taken into custody by police officers and charged in connection with Haston's death. Despite numerous domestic violence incidents in Jersey City, including this incident in April, Hudson County is not among the places in New Jersey that receive funding for intervention and battering programs. Officials have said that domestic violence incidents have the potential to ramp up during the pandemic. Read more here, and how to get help. The National Domestic Violence Hotline can be reached at 800-799-7233 or via the website (click here), which allows for chatting and texting options. The above charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Got news? Email [email protected].
