High: 35 Low: 15. Here are the top three stories today in Grand Rapids: Meijer is contributing $1 million to Kids' Food Basket to provide meals to Grand Rapids Public Schools students on weekends. The GRPS Meijer Weekend Meal Program serves an estimated 500 children across two district elementary schools; the newly-announced donation will expand the program into the 2022-23 school year. According to estimates from the Food Security Council collected early in the COVID-19 pandemic, approximately 1.9 million people in Michigan ⁠— including 552,000 children ⁠— have faced food insecurity. (WZZM13.com)In an effort to create a greener West Side, the Bridge Street Market in Grand Rapids is encouraging shoppers to bring their own bags. Effective Earth Day (Apr. 22), customers will be asked to either bring their own bags or purchase bags at the checkout lanes. Said store director Mitchell Cook, "I don't want this to be a burden on anybody. We want to make sure it's a seamless process and it's going to be learning for all of us. Our team, our community, we want to do it together the right way."
