Goats Clear Brush Above San Francisco Dog Park

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Goats helped to clear brush on a steep hill near Interstate Highway 80 and the Bay Bridge in San Francisco's Rincon Hill neighborhood Wednesday, according to the office of Supervisor Matt Haney. The goats came by truck Wednesday morning to graze on the vegetation along a steep hill between the Rincon Hill Dog Park and the highway. Haney's office had worked with Caltrans and neighboring buildings to procure the goats to help clear the brush, which could pose a fire risk. The land had mixed jurisdiction between the city and Caltrans, and the steep slope made it difficult for human workers to safely maintain it. "It turns out that the safest and most sustainable, environmentally friendly way to clear the weeds is to bring in these new friends who also get a big lunch," Haney said in a news release. Haney was on hand at the site Wednesday to see the goats chow down on the brush and sent out photos of the animals at work. "I'm so appreciative of the neighborhood for asking for this, and to Caltrans for bringing the goats out, and to the essential workers here making it happen," he said.
