Leica Store DC presents: American Memories/Memorias de America, featuring the photography of Hector Emanuel and Michael Robinson Chavez.
As photographers we often find ourselves looking forward; the next assignment, the next trip, the next project, focusing on what is to come. We run the risk of overlooking, ignoring or forgetting our past. What got us to this point in our visual growth? How did we really cultivate our talent to tell visual stories?
For this exhibit we decided to take a deep breath and look back. To remember a time of exploration, fascination and transition. These photographs, from Peru and Colombia, two extraordinary South American countries, in many ways define us. These places rearranged how we saw the world, other people and their circumstances. Our eyes, like searchlights, took it all in and translated the scenes through our cameras.
The equipment has certainly changed, from analog to digital and now phones that can send our photos worldwide in an instant. One of the joys for both of us was leaving the heavy SLRs behind and working with the Leica M6 and a bag full of Tri-X film. Moreover, working without the demands of editors and assignment pressures was pure bliss.
All these years later we wonder, are the photographs we are making now…different?
For both of us, the work from Colombia and Peru, respectively, marks when we started photographing with a personal voice and vision. They were the start of a dedication to long term work and a love of intimate storytelling.
