Join us at Compound as we learn about the antioxidant benefits of the Galangal and Turmeric roots.
Known within the Long Beach food community as the "Cambodian Cowboy" Chad Phuong owns Battambong BBQ, a beloved local pop-up serving Southern-style slow cooked meats with Cambodian flair. In this 2-part series Chad will share the history, healing properties, and cooking uses of some of the most revered East Asian aromatics--turmeric, galangal, Kaffir lime leaves, and lemongrass.
The first session in our Healing Aromatics series, this class will include a discussion of the antioxidant benefits of the Galangal and Turmeric roots as well as demonstrations of ancient and modern abstraction techniques, a cooking demonstration, and sampling of traditional Cambodian recipes.
Chad Phuong is a local legend, having founded Cambodian Cajun Crawfish, Cambodian Cuisine, and locally famous Battambong BBQ. Chad’s love of cooking stems from his early days in Battambang, Cambodia, where he observed his grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles, and learned how to forage, fish, hunt, and cook daily. A temporary move to Texas gave this self-taught chef a deep dive into the world of Texas-style BBQ. Catering for the Long Beach community for now for over 20 years, Chad is a passionate volunteer, serving on boards like SHE (Health Sustainability Empowerment), The Maye Center, and Long Beach Fresh. He loves using his unique culinary skills to contribute to positive change while using food as a means of celebrating cultural history, cultivating community, and spreading joy.
