Description

JOHNSTON, RI —Greenville Avenue at the I-295 overpass in Johnston will close temporarily for overnight construction starting July 20. The closure for work on Route 5, which is part of the $16.5 million bridge replacement project, will take place between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. starting the night of July 20. The closure is expected to last for one week. The overnight closure will allow for steel beam placements for the new bridge. Westbound traffic will use the I-295 North ramp, get off at Exit 12A (Route 44/Putnam Pike) and use I-295 South to Exit 10 to get back to Greenville Avenue. Eastbound traffic will be directed to I-295 South, get off at Exit 9C (Route 6/Hartford Avenue) and then use I-295 North to Exit 10 to Greenville Avenue. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation shifted I-295 South traffic onto a temporary bridge in late May. This closure is not expected to affect the current I-295 traffic pattern. The bridge carries 78,000 vehicles a day, with replacement expected to finish in the fall of 2022.
